Getting Started with WordPress (Self-Hosted)
You can setup WordPress, and have your website up and running in less than ten minutes. That may sound un realistic to you, however, if you follow this guide, you can do it on your phone, tablet or desktop.
WordPress now powers more than 30% of the web, and like much of the indie web, it puts the power back into your hands when it comes to your online presence.
WordPress is also fully customizable content management system (CMS), and is completely scaleable as your website grows. You can use it as a simple blogging platform, or turn it into a e-commerce power horse with WooCommerce.
Follow the steps below to get your website up and running.
1. Choose your domain name.
Have the perfect domain name setup already? skip to the next step. If you don’t, then lets go through some great options for you.
You can choose to buy your domain name from your hosting provider, and sometimes they’ll even throw the first year in for free when you sign up to a yearly subscription. Or you can buy your domain name from a dedicated domain name provider.
Why buy your domain name separate to your hosting provider? Well, there is no real reason these days, hosting providers up times are very close to 100%. That being said, when you have your domain name through a dedicated provider, if your server goes down, you can change the name servers to a new provider, and be back up and running in no time.
I buy domains pretty frequently. I use, and frequently recommend iwantmyname.com. They have one of the quickest, easiest setup, and domain control panels I have used.
2. Choose your hosting provider.
Next, it’s time for you to choose a great hosting provider. This is important. You want to find a hosting provider that will support, and grow with you, as you grow your business.
When you start, you might not see yourself with many page views, or needing huge amounts of storage space. However, getting your self setup with a great hosting provider, that will allow you scale your website hosting package as your business, and your website grows is important.
There are so many great hosting providers out there, below are few that I’ve used for various projects, and still do.
BlueHost – Recommend by WordPress.
SiteGround – Recommend by WordPress.
FlyWheel – Premium managed WordPress hosting.
3. Install WordPress.
Installing WordPress is straightforward, especially if you have chosen one of the hosting providers above. Most hosting providers have partnered with WordPress to host a one-click installation of WordPress sites.
This allows you to get up and running with a basic installation relatively quickly with little knowledge, or the need to hire an expensive web designer to do the installation for you.
4. Choose a Theme
One of the other great things about WordPress is that you have access to thousands of themes for free, and plenty of premium themes through third parties like the ones below.
Businesses have been built off of building WordPress Themes, however like many other products, there are some great themes out there, and not so great ones.
Spend some time to find the right Theme for your business, don’t worry though, it’s as easy to change your WorPpress theme as it is your clothes, just try not to do it too often, and once you find the right Theme for your brand, you all set and on your way.

Now that you’ve chosen your theme, your ready to start filling your new website with content. This could be your first blog post, or the landing page for your business.
The good news is that now you have complete control over your website, and can make changes as you need to. You’re no longer tied to your web developer or agency partner. Not that they’re bad, thats what I do for a living.
Bonus – Get business email by G Suites.
Are you still using a free emailed provided by Google, Microsoft or Apple? It’s time switch to your domain.com email address. If you already own the domain name, why not setup email addresses for your business with it?
It used to be expensive, and time consuming to manage your own email domain, however, now with G Suites, and Office 365 Business, they take care of all that stress for a small monthly fee.
